Composite Restorations in Lichfield – Lisa’s Story

Why Did You Choose Spires Dental Clinic For Your Dental Treatment?

Lots of my friends come here & they all have lovely teeth.

How Did You Find Your First Visit With Us And It What Way Did It Help You With The Decisions You Needed To Make?

It was incredibly relaxed yet informative. It wasn’t about the sale of treatment it was about what it would take to me happy and Stuart insisted that was my decision to make and nobody else’s.

Why Did You Choose To Have Your Teeth Built Up With Composite Restorations? Why Not Veneers?

One visit and they’re done! I honestly don’t think veneers would’ve looked any better.

How Did You Find The Treatment? Two Hours In The Dental Chair Sounds Scary To Most People, But What Was It Like Form Your Point Of View?

I didn’t feel a thing!! Every element of the treatment was explained. It was bizarrely quite relaxing!

You Seemed A Little Stunned, Happy, But Stunned, When We First Showed You The Result, Why Do You Think That Is?

I was gobsmacked that these were actually my teeth and they looked amazing! Couldn’t get my head around it & now I have I haven’t stopped smiling.

How Do You Feel Now About What We Have Achieved And Would You Recommend The Process To Anybody Else?

As far as I’m concerned you’ve achieved the smile that I never thought I’d have and for that I’m so grateful. Would highly recommend you and the treatment you provided to anyone.

A Dentists View

Lisa had needed composite fillings in her front teeth about 3 years ago that had started to chip and stain prematurely.  Clearly the result was not a good one and Lisa was worried about showing her teeth to all around her.  We also felt that by the strategic addition of composite (white filling material) we could ‘straighten’ Lisa’s teeth and make them look more in proportion, providing added value rather than just replacing the fillings.

We also spoke to Lisa about:

  • Veneers – which we advised her to stay away from given the increased cost (£650 per tooth) and the need to drill away some of the good tooth structure.
  • Braces – which we thought was a good idea BUT how could Lisa make a decision on the need for a brace when her teeth looked how they did.
  • Whitening- its a good idea to whiten your teeth prior to cosmetic treatment if you don’t like the colour of your teeth.

Lisa’s treatment went really well, and she was an excellent patient but in these cases it is difficult to prepare someone for the change it will make.  When we showed Lisa the huge change, she was stunned by the difference in her smile, enough so that she was speechless.

Thankfully Lisa loved the result, enough so that she was happy to contribute to our blog 😊

We love treatments like this as we have made a massive difference without compromising the health of people teeth at all.  The treatment is also reversible just in case she wants to have braces in the future or porcelain veneers.

Total treatment time: One 2 hour 30 minute appointment

Total treatment cost: £538.

Implant Retained Dentures – Roger’s Story

Roger had been experiencing problems with his dentures and was looking into using implant retained dentures. After much research online he contacted Spires Dental in Lichfield to arrange an appointment with our dentist Stuart to discuss his options. After hearing all the information he was able to make an informed choice and decided to proceed with implant retained dentures. Read about his story and how the treatment benefited him.

Why did you choose spires dental clinic for your dental treatment?

I spent many hours trawling the internet, reading customer reviews and found Spires to have the best reviews.

Your current dentures were only 3 years old, why were you looking to change them?

My current dentures did not fit tightly especially the bottom set and I found I had to use Fixadent or Polifix to hold them in place and found I could only eat soft foods, and most days I was having to re-glue my dentures twice a day.

How did you find the whole process?

From my first visit I felt comfortable, at ease and reassured that Stuart knew exactly what he was talking about.

I went to spires for two reasons:

  1. Was to ask about a root that my previous dentist told me was fused to the bone and could not come out and was causing some discomfort.
  2. I wanted to know if I would be suitable for implants.

Stuart first of all said he did not believe the root was fused to the bone and I had it removed by a member of Stuart’s team.

Stuart spent time with me explaining the various options regarding implants and what he felt I would be comfortable with and which I would benefit from.   Stuart could very easily have steered me towards the most expensive procedure but did not as he felt I would be more than happy with just the 2 implants on the bottom jaw and have a new top plate made as well.

I was given this information and costs and went away to think about what was the best option for me. From start to finish I felt fully informed.

What are your thoughts about your treatment now its all done and dusted?

What can I say,  I’ve thrown the Fixadent away and was able to eat a steak in a restaurant for the first time in years. These dentures actually feel as though they are part of my mouth.

What would you say to anyone who was thinking about choosing spires dental clinic for similar treatment?

Go for it, knowing that the treatment and service you receive will be first class.

Dentist’s Summary

There are many people out there with lower dentures that bounce around the mouth like they are on a trampoline.  This can be easily avoided by using either teeth, if they are present, or implants to fix the denture into place.  This greatly increases confidence and function for the patient- Roger was able to go out for a steak the same night he had the final dentures delivered and eat some pork scratchings!  This is not necessarily what we would recommend but good on Roger for giving it a go.

Once placed, it is important the denture is removed and the implants are cared for by the patient, cleaning with an electric toothbrush twice a day.  This is not difficult but it is crucial if you want your implants to last.  Roger is already cleaning them very well, as can be seen from the final photo we took two weeks after fitting the dentures.

Let’s be frank, the one downside is the short term cost.   Given the dentures will last 7-10 years before needing updating/adjusting and the success rates of implants are excellent, we expect this to be an investment over the long term.  The difference it makes to people is quite simply profound… I love this treatment!

It’s been an absolute pleasure looking after Roger and I cannot thank him enough for writing this testimonial for us and allowing us to share it with you. We will see him now once a year for maintenance, ensuring his denture is rock solid and that his soft tissues and the implants are healthy.

New Patient Consultation at your Lichfield Dentist

Hello and welcome to Spires Dental Clinic, your dentist in Lichfield.

So, you want to know what you’ve let yourself in for?

I can’t blame you really, visiting a new dentist can be very stressful leading to many questions.

  • What are they like?
  • What will they do?
  • What will I need doing?
  • How much is this going to cost me?

The list goes on…

The aim of this particular article is to help you understand why we do what we do and then hopefully you’ll feel more comfortable about giving us a chance to help you look after you.

First things first, COST…

New dental patient consultations cost £44, its half price at the moment, and we will ask for a deposit of £22 to secure the appointment when you call the dental practice in Lichfield.  There are no hidden costs so no matter what, if we take x-rays or photos of your teeth the cost stays the same.  The dental appointment will last 50 minutes however we ask you to budget for about 60-70 minutes of your time within the dental practice.

Now we believe that the two most important appointments we can offer our patients are the initial consultation and your first visit to our dental hygienist. Initial consultations are where we set out our long term aims to get your mouth healthy enough so that you need to visit the dentist as little as possible. Our dental hygienists are absolutely amazing and your time with them is essential for good dental health,  but I’ll leave that one for another day.

On arrival to the practice...

reception staff dentist in lichfield staffordshire

...your first contact will be one of these two, Beth

can see they don’t really like to be photographed BUT they will,

I’m sure, welcome you to our wonderful practice...

(that’s me by the way) and Jess. Now as you

... show you around the practice and escort you to our lounge...

Hopefully if you’re early you can have a coffee

Yes we do let you have sugar, before you ask.

(we love our nespresso) or another beverage.

Hopefully we won’t keep you waiting long and either Simon or Stuart

will come and introduce themselves and escort you to the surgery.

The first thing we want to do is find out a little more about you and why you have come to see us.  Now Stuart and Simon really love talking to their patients and finding out all about them.  This is a crucial part of any dental appointment, we obviously want to understand what it is you want to achieve, but also because dentistry is a HUGE subject and they don’t want to gabble on about all things dental when most of it won’t apply to you. They’ll also confirm any notes you’ve made about your medical history and see how long it’s been since you last saw a dentist.

Once everyone is happy they’ll invite you to take a seat in our comfy dental chairs so they can have a look around your mouth.

The first thing that we check for are any lumps or bumps and red or white patches that may be present in your mouth. The vast majority of funny things are innocuous but we need to make a record so we can monitor them over time. In some rare cases we may have to refer you if we are at all suspicious of anything.  It’s the first thing we do because it’s the MOST important job we have.

Next we’ll check your teeth by gently blowing some air around them to remove the saliva so we can see things more clearly, and look for a few things whilst asking themselves questions about what’s going on in your mouth:

Is there any decay?

Decay is caused by having sugar frequently, not necessarily a lot, just often.

Are there any fractures?

Sadly dentistry weakens teeth and as such teeth can break.  We can sometimes see the fractures before they break but not always L

Is there any wear on your teeth?

If there is any wear, is it indicative of tooth grinding? Tooth grinding contributes to the evil triad (decay, gum disease and structural failure of teeth) that threatens your teeth and gums.

Are your gums ok?

We then check your gums by gently feeling around them to see how hard or soft they are and to see if they bleed easily.  Bleeding, red and soft gums are all hallmarks of active gum disease.

There are other things we check in relation to certain procedures (braces, implants etc.) but that’s all a bit too numerous to mention in this blog.

Photos of your teeth… why?

Finally we take photographs of your teeth and gums to help us provide you with the knowledge you need about your mouth, and then we take x-rays (if required) to show anything we physically cannot see and to provide us with a mechanism for the long term monitoring of your oral and dental health.

Finally we take photographs of your teeth and gums to help us provide you with the knowledge you need about your mouth, and then we take x-rays (if required) to show anything we physically cannot see and to provide us with a mechanism for the long term monitoring of your oral and dental health.

Through all this, Simon and Stuart will be communicating with their nurse in dental jargon, allowing them to convey the location of anything they see.  I wouldn’t try and understand it if I were you as it always sounds like they are saying really terrible things about your mouth.

After a rinse out comes the important bit, The Chat…

During the chat, Simon or Stuart will talk to you about any problems you may face, the risk factors that may be involved, how we can deal with any issues and how to prevent them in the future.  Simon and Stuart are guided by some core principles that ensure we deliver the best level of dental care we can:

  1. Dentistry is a poor alternative to healthy teeth so we always use prevention through education.
  2. If you present to us with a problem we will go over all your options but we are always looking to recommend the option that will have the least impact on the strength of your teeth, or the one that makes your teeth stronger and last longer.
  3. If our dentists are ever in doubt about what to recommend they will default to either:
    • The ‘Daughter Test’ i.e. what would you do if it was your daughter that needed help with a particular problem.
    • If the problem is not urgent we will leave the final decision up to you.

The photographs and x-rays provide an invaluable insight when communicating all this stuff, although dentistry is not hard to understand. It’s much easier if you can see the problem yourself on our monitor.

You are welcome to ask questions at any time during your dental appointment and we welcome such interaction.  We want you to fully understand what is going on in your mouth and to make the correct decision on how you wish to proceed.

Once our dentists are all finished, and you have obtained the answers you are looking for, they will escort you back to reception to see Jess or Beth (me again!) who will go through any financial information and arrange any further dental appointments that may be required.  We don’t do the hard sell so we will never try and coerce you into making an appointment. As Dentists, we want to see people who want to see us.  It’s far less stressful to work with the willing patients who value their oral and dental health.

Within a week of your appointment you will receive a report on the health of your mouth as well as the options open to you for any treatment you may wish to have with us. The dentists’ email address will be included so please feel free to email them if you have any further queries. Believe it or not they love talking about teeth, even if it’s in their own spare time.

About a week after that we will give you a call to make sure you received your report, answer any questions you may have and arrange any further appointments.

I do hope this has given you an insight on how we work and why we do what we do.

Thanks for your time and we hope to see you soon at Spires Dental Clinic, your dentist in Lichfield. Please call us on 01543 411 088 or email us on enquiries@spiresdental.co.uk.

A journey to a happier smile – Ravi’s Story

Ravi had a gap between his two front teeth and had always felt insecure about his smile. He had wanted to do something about it for a long time and as a Pharmacist he is working with the public and wanted a smile he could feel confident with.

Why did you want cosmetic dental work done?

I wanted it done because I felt insecure regarding the gap between my front two teeth. When I looked into the mirror I didn’t like my teeth very much, and was looking at various options on how to either close the gap or have veneers. It was something I wanted done for many years and when I looked at photographs I kept noticing the gap that I have.

Why did you choose Spires?

I went to the practice as I was in the area for a few weeks staying at a friend’s. I went to the practice not knowing what to expect and I registered with them. Spires went through the various options I could use and the cost of each. I asked them to advise me on what they would do if they were in my position. Spires gave me various options, but advised that I firstly could try a cost-effective way to reduce the gap by using some sort of filling material which closes the gap. They showed me an example of this and it was impossible to tell where the filling was placed on the teeth!

How did you feel after your first consultation?

My first consultation was great, I felt really welcomed. As this was an unfamiliar dental practice I was weary of how good the dentists here actually were. However, they knew what they were talking about and I felt confident going forward with them to look after my teeth. We tried the moulding on the first consultation to see what it would look like and if my teeth would look too wide. I felt reassured that the treatment would go to plan and my front teeth wouldn’t look too big. I liked the fact that I was able to see the end result before anything permanent happened. I had confidence in the practice and went ahead with the treatment on the second consultation.

One thing that stood out was how Spires listened to exactly what my concern was and what I wanted to achieve. This was shown when they made sure they kept a 0.5mm gap that I requested between my front teeth!

How has the treatment affected your life?

It has greatly affected my life as I don’t feel insecure when I smile, and my teeth look great. Spires were very professional when doing the treatment and were very particular when treating my teeth as they looked at every detail to make sure they were symmetrical. I would definitely go back to Spires for any future treatments I might need. I have never felt so relaxed and confident in a dental practice before and highly recommend visiting Spires!

Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics in Lichfield – Patricia’s Story

We are very proud of how we care for our patients and we like to shout about what we do here.  This always comes across better if we are talking about real people rather than certain treatments.  Patricia has wanted to improve her smile for some time and came to Spires Dental for orthodontic treatment.

When Patricia came to see us we listened to what she wanted to achieve and we laid out a plan of how we should proceed.
From our point of view we wanted to:

  1. Align the gums so the end result would look as good as possible.
  2. Straighten the teeth to make the treatment as conservative as possible.
  3. Improve the appearance of the front teeth using veneers. We rarely recommend this as a solution but given the number of fillings present we felt this was necessary.

The only way we could accomplish our goals was to align the teeth using Radiance clear brace system over 6 months and then to carry out the veneer treatment.

We weren’t sure if Patricia would be up for this but she has been great. She listened to the reasons why we wanted to proceed in such a manner and then allowed us to do the right thing.

All in all, Patricia is very happy with the her treatment. Read what she had to say about her experience.

Why did you choose Spires Dental clinic for your advanced dental treatment?

I was recommended by a friend and had been searching for someone local to ‘fix my smile’ which I had wanted to do all my adult life. I found myself able to do this financially and anxious to have the best I could find.

Why did you want to improve your smile?

I have wanted this for a long time – I have always thought that healthy, straight, white teeth are really important.

All our treatment is bespoke so how did you find having both brace and veneer treatment?

I was a bit concerned initially about having a brace at the age of 64 but it was very discreet and I found it easy to take care of. The first two weeks I had trouble with rubbing on the inside of my mouth, but after that it was no trouble at all. The veneer process was quick and painless and every effort was made to make sure I was 100% happy with the result.

What are your thoughts about your new smile?

I am delighted with my new smile and this has given me much more confidence in myself after a very difficult year.
